Would 90g be sufficient for 8 Discus plus a school of pristella tetras 9?
Or should I go bigger and consider a ? Great looking fish, bigger is always better You can hold at least 9 discus in a 90, and in a Click to expand Number of filters depends solely on how much flow they produce.
I personally shoot for 10x turnover per hour, usually 8x an hour is the guideline. I'm not much a plant guy so I can't help very much with lighting and plant selections I have heard great things about the eheim heaters, but I put a w in my 95g discus tank I'm an aqueon fan myself.
Based on what I've heard the eheims should do the job just fine, but based on what I've dealt with 2 w aqueons would do just as well with less risk. When it comes to a tank big enough to use two filters I like to use more than one type as long as the stand can hold a canister. A good combination is a canister and a HOB style filter, on my discus tank I have a fluval alongside a marineland I'm not as familiar with eheim canisters either, but I'm thinking the biggest one they have only gives about gph in turnover.
I would suggest using this: SunSun canister filter , it's still of great quality and has a really strong pump gph and compared to other canisters of the same caliber the price is a steal. Then depending on if you're going for 8x or 10x you can go with an AquaClear 50 gph or AquaClear gph With substrates I say it depends on how big your discus are and how big the ones you'll get are going to be.
Doing a bare bottom tank is way easier to clean with how much you have to feed little discus, but as they get older they get less messy and you can manage a substrate easier. Cycling without fish is always the best way to go. Another Discus keeper! Welcome aboard! I have a discus tank now. It moves gph. I use this tank to create breeding pairs.
I have 5 breeding pairs right now and I have another 75 gallon tank I use for quarentine. I actually just got 7 new fish yesterday.

These are my pairs I'm currently working with. All of them are from World Champion breederc Tony Tan. This is not good for your overall Discus fish community.
You can use the above formula to figure your comfort level and how much work you want to devote to aquarium maintenance and your particular tank size. For easy reference, if your setup is greater or less than gallons you can do the math as follows. Discus alone With good filtration and frequent WCs you could probably keep many more.
But if you want them to breed - 2 couples - I think is the limit. Can't answer the other questions. Avoid plecos though.
