The house itself, the furniture and the various items around the house were all clearly carefully chosen and drawn — I've seen the movie twice, and I saw lots of things the second time that I'd missed the first.
Notice how, when the Borrowers venture out into the larger world, perspective is used to make you feel like you're there with them, and particularly how the sounds change, so that the normal house noises we're all used to seem so much larger all of a sudden.
And I loved that the animators really thought about the science of things, so that the liquids — from the tea in Homily's teapot to the tears Arrietty cries when her mother is captured — form huge to the Borrowers drops due to surface tension, just as they would in reality see Kathy Ceceri's article on that subject. Just masterfully done, in all respects. There are many similarities, but the plot has many differences. The characters of the Borrowers are very close to their portrayal in the book, but the normal-size humans are much less so.
Shawn, in particular, is quite different from The Boy who is never named in the book, who starts out kind of obnoxious and only gradually befriends Arrietty and helps out her family. Much of the plot about looking for other Borrower families isn't in the film, but you won't miss it — there's a reason that, while the book is named for the Borrowers as a group, the film's title mentions only Arrietty.
It's first and foremost her story, and it works really well that way. The film only goes for an hour and a half, so if at all possible get your kids to wait. Every scene has something beautiful to see, so you shouldn't miss anything if you can avoid it. If a trip to the bathroom can't be avoided, go whenever you must: There really is no time to go that's any better or worse than any other.
