Since , we have been supplying lightweight aggregates to hydroelectric dams throughout North America to seal sluice gates, head gates and stop logs. Some hydro producers continued their use of coal cinders, bottom ash and clinkers while others tried different materials such as corn, wood chips, horse manure and concrete materials with limited success. Beginning with the weight, texture and sink rates of coal cinders, many materials were tested to see if they could seal gates and stop logs as well as coal cinders.
Some materials sank too fast or not at all, others did not have the same abrasive texture that would allow it to mechanically lock into the leaks.
